Restoration of Peshawar to Torkham Railway Track Will Cost Rs.1982 million

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Railway informed the Senate Standing Committee on Railways on Monday that it lacked the funds to repair the 59 km of railway track from Peshawar to Torkham and that the restoration would cost Rs. 1982 million. (Reported by news source)

Senator Mushtaq Ahmad believed that this railroad track had historical significance in addition to being crucial for trade.

The railway track was built in 1926 and used until 2007, but it was damaged by the 2007 flood catastrophe and has not been repaired to this day. He claimed that a piece of the route also passes close to an airport, which made repair efforts more difficult.

The Senate Committee recommended that the Ministry of Railways consult the Ministry of Tourism regarding the Peshawar and Torkham project’s potential from a tourism standpoint.

Additionally, the secretary for the ministry of railways briefed the senate body on the $8.2 billion Afghan Transit project, which will connect Pakistan and Uzbekistan.
