Hundreds of Acres of State Land Will Soon Be Returned to Port Qasim Authority

KARACHI: The 1,250 acres that Port Qasim Authority (PQA) gave to Textile City Ltd. in 2006 on a 50-year lease will soon be returned, according to Rear Admiral (r) Syed Hasan Nasir Shah, Chairman of PQA. (Reported by news source)

The project was initially intended to be a designated industrial zone for textile exporters within PQA when it was first developed in 2004. It ran into some difficulties, though, and was finally shelved. The PQA has land holdings for industrial units totaling around 8,700 acres. This vast expanse of land, however, was useless.

Within the next two months, the PQA will execute a contract for the construction of a Rs. 5 billion combined effluent treatment facility, with more than 400 units, Pakistan’s largest industrial region does not have this contemporary necessity.

In just 18 months, the port will open a broader navigational channel to deeper ships, enabling port access. This relates to the proposal to widen the channel by 200 metres to 250 metres.
