China agrees to provide Pakistan $1.6 Billion for the Karakoram Highway

ISLAMABAD: As part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, Pakistan has asked China for a $1.6 billion soft loan to realign the Karakorum Highway from Thakot to Raikot (CPEC). (Reported by news source)

The Central Development Working Party (CWDP) has now approved a concept clearance for the realignment of the Karakorum Highway from Thakot to Raikot project, which will allow the governments of Pakistan and China to finalize the soft loan for the project. China has already given its approval in this regard.

China and Pakistan will split the $1.8 billion cost of realigning the 256 kilometres of the Karakorum Highway between Thakot and Raikot in proportions of 90% and 10%, respectively.

According to the sources, China has agreed to contribute $1.620 billion, and Pakistan’s government will contribute $180 million under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP).

In anticipation of the construction of three dams on the Indus River, the Karakorum Highway from Thakot to Raikot is being planned for realignment
